Soon it was time to head west. They made it to Indiana Dunes on Lake Michigan the first day.
Wow, they have seagulls up north too!
They got to see some really cool old houses that had come across Lake Michigan on barges after the Chicago World's Fair in 1934.
They also did some hiking at Indiana Dunes, and not all of it was in the sand!
The next day it was off to Chicago on Flat's first train ride!
He got to see his reflection in "The Bean."
He also made some new friends from Japan.
There were lots of tall buildings in Chicago.
Flat saw a bit of Gary, Indiana on the trip home.

At the Omaha Zoo Flat saw someone who he thought may be related to him.
And he got to meet some WW2 GIs at Union Station.
He got to sit in the locomotive of the train there.
And sit in an old-time sleeper car.
Here's how the bed folds down at night.
There was a dinosaur there too, but it made Flat nervous, even if it was just a skeleton, and its name was Sue.
An old-timer shares train stories.
Flat's next stop was the Corn Palace in South Dakota. He and Bonnie like these matching hats!
He made some new friends there too.
What a "corny" picture!
The Corn Palace is covered with new pictures made of corn and other grains each year. You can see a part on the right side where they're working at putting up this year's murals. Flat didn't eat any corn.
But he did pose with this one.
Free ice water, 5¢ coffee and 15¢ donuts at Wall Drug, Wall, SD.
Flat liked visiting the Badlands.
Mount Rushmore was fun too.
This is Buffalo Bill's grave in Deadwood, South Dakota.
People left things by it, but fortunately the Joyces didn't leave Flat.
Then it was on to the Devil's Tower in Wyoming.
Can you find Flat in this photo?
A nice ranger took this photo.
This is the "back side" of Devil's Tower.
Flat is bowled over by Devil's Tower.
Bonnie and Flat stand next to the actual base of Devil's Tower.
This is one of the pieces that fell off.
There were some cool planes at one of the rest areas.
Flat got to ride a buffalo in Cody, Wyoming.
Sometimes it's just fun to sit and watch people go by.

Finally got to Yellowstone National Park. Flat watches a boiling mud pot.
Then it was on to Yellowstone Falls.
